Yanni Hufnagel: College Basketball’s greatest assistant coach

Yanni Hufnagel is one of America’s greatest college basketball coaches in the sport today. He currently serves as assistant coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball team under the leadership of Eric Musselman. He has previously been an assistant coach for California State, Vanderbilt, and Harvard. He has become one of the most respected recruiters in college basketball.

Yanni Hufnagel was born into a Jewish family in Scarsdale, New York. While he was growing up, he would read every book on coaching that he could find. As a kid, he would bring the plays that he read about to life by using basketball action figures. His time in the basketball court began with him calling games for his local public television network.

Yanni Hufnagel would then become Cornell University’s basketball manager. During his studies at Cornell University he earned a summer internship with the NBA’s New Jersey Nets. After graduating from Cornell, Yanni Hufnagel was interviewed and hired by Okalahoma’s head coach Jeff Capel. Jeff Capel would later recommend him to Harvard, where he became the volunteer assistant coach. He began to recruit players across the country. Yanni Hufnagel has become known for his successes that he has brought to the teams he was worked with.

Yanni Hufnagel earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell and Master’s Degree in Adult Higher Education from Oklahoma. Yanni Hufnagel is one of the best salesmen, when it comes to getting recruiters to join his team.

Yanni Hufnagel has spent time as an assistant coach with several top-tier schools including Oklahoma, Harvard, Vanderbilt, California and now Nevada. He has managed to bring success to those schools and continues to do so at Nevada and will continue until he decides it’s time retire and move on to the next chapter.


The Recruiting Ability of Yanni Hufnagel

Being successful in the world of college basketball requires being multi talented. Coaches today are expected to not only win games but also recruit, develop talent and maintain a clean program. There are lots of coaches fail to make it in this tough world. One coach that has been able to succeed in this world is Yanni Hufnagel. Hufnagel has built an incredible reputation for being a great recruiter and player developer.


Hufnagel began his career in Oklahoma. Hufnagel was a graduate assistant that got an opportunity to work with the basketball program. During this time he helped to develop a future NBA all star in Blake Griffin. Hufnagel’s work with Griffin earned him a lot of attention. It would simply be the beginning of his success.


After Oklahoma Yanni Hufnagel would move to Harvard University. While at Harvard Hufnagel would continue to demonstrate his ability to develop players. He would work directly with two future professional players, Jeremy Lin and Wesley Saunders. Harvard would also began to win a lot of games. The team made it to the NCAA tournament on multiple occasions during Hufnagel’s tenure there. Coaches and members of the college basketball work were beginning to take notice of Hufnagel.


After Harvard Hufnagel would have a number of other stops. He would work at California University, Vanderbilt and Nevada. He had the opportunity to work with well known coaches like Kevin Stallings and Cuonzo Martin. He was instrumental in recruiting and developing a number of very good players including Jaylen Brown, Ivan Rabb, Matthew Fisher-Davis and Wade Baldwin IV. Hufnagel has had great success and is respected by many in the college basketball world. With his incredible resume, it should be simply a matter of time before Yanni Hufnagel is a head coach at a major university.
